Featured Learning Tool

TeenBiz™ is a Web-based reading and writing program that we are using in Reading & Writing Lab this semester. It has a proven track record for improving "reading comprehension, writing proficiency, vocabulary development and high-stakes test scores."

You can also work on your reading skills at home with the same great TeenBiz3000 technology program we're using in school.

How does it work?
Each day, TeenBiz3000 sends a current events article. Every student in the class gets the same basic article, but the content is customized to match each student's own reading level. The article comes with a variety of fun activities to improve comprehension, vocabulary and writing skills. As your reading level improves, TeenBiz will increase the level of difficulty so you remain challenged and interested.

How can I use TeenBiz3000 outside of school?
You can also share in the fun at home - or anywhere a computer is connected to the Internet. Here's how:

Log on to www.teenbiz3000.com with the username and password you received from Ms. Brody, and follow these five easy steps:

Step 1:  Check your e-mail. Read the message from TeenBiz and respond.
Step 2:  Click the link in the e-mail to read that day's news article.
Step 3:  Do the activity.
Step 4:  Finish the thought question.
Step 5:  Vote in the poll.

Explore other TeenBiz features, including other articles, the Stock Market game, puzzles, jokes, and more.

We hope you enjoy exploring TeenBiz and use it often.

 Inspiration

Sita Sings the Blues is a wonderful animated film by self-taught comic strip artist Nina Paley. On her Web site, Ms. Paley explains:

"Sita Sings the Blues" is a musical, animated personal interpretation of the Indian epic the Ramayana. The aspect of the story that I focus on is the relationship between Sita and Rama, who are gods incarnated as human beings, and even they can't make their marriage work.

And then there's my story. I'm just an ordinary human, who also can't make her marriage work. And the way that it fails is uncannily similar to the way Rama and Sita's [relationship fails]. Inexplicable yet so familiar. And the question that I asked and the question people still ask is, "Why"? Why did Rama reject Sita? Why did my husband reject me? We don't know why, and we didn't know 3,000 years ago. I like that there's really no way to answer the question, that you have to accept that this is something that happens to a lot of humans.
