What is a WebQuest?

A WebQuest is an inquiry based activity in which students can work independently or collaboratively using Web based resources. The WebQuest assignment is distributed electronically (can be a Word doc, Web page, PowerPoint presentation, spreadsheet, email, etc.) so it can include guidance and links for users to navigate. Ideally, it should facilitate higher order thinking (“analysis, problem-solving, creativity and judgment”), and emulate what we do in real life situations. Almost any topic can work, as long as the topic involves inquiry and higher-order thinking skills. WebQuests require students to look at a variety of sources to search for and synthesize information, and ultimately, to take a position in terms of what they have found.  WebQuests provide an opportunity to learn by doing.
